Ellie Schilling is an experienced litigator representing plaintiffs and defendants in all aspects of federal, state, and administrative practice, with extensive experience at the trial court and appellate court levels. She has handled some of Louisiana’s most high-profile civil rights litigation. Her work routinely holds government agencies, state actors, and Universities accountable for their actions.
Experience and Litigation Focus
Ellie specializes in complex commercial and healthcare litigation. She represents clients across a variety of industries in contract and business disputes, including successfully litigating cases on behalf of car dealerships in disputes against automobile manufacturers, and is a nationally-recognized expert on reproductive rights and health in Louisiana. She regularly litigates constitutional challenges to laws, regulations, and government conduct under both the federal constitution and the Louisiana constitution.
Throughout her career, Ellie has handled healthcare regulatory matters on behalf of physicians, health clinics, and other health services providers, across an array of medical specialties and settings, in suits against hospitals and disputes with the administrative and disciplinary agencies that regulate the healthcare profession.
One of the backbones of Ellie’s practice is representing students in school disciplinary proceedings and related litigation. She has extensive experience responding to Title IX investigations and other disciplinary proceedings at the University, graduate school, and secondary school levels, and with school disciplinary hearings and related litigation involving a wide-range of conduct and academic allegations.
In addition to healthcare clients and school administrative proceedings, Ellie’s administrative law practice includes representing clients in hearings and other disputes with regulatory boards, agencies, and governmental bodies throughout Louisiana, including actions taken under the Administrative Procedure Act, the notice and comment process for proposed regulations, and pressing for transparency under the Louisiana Public Records Law.
Professional Activities and Community Involvement
Ellie has testified countless times as a legal expert at the Louisiana Legislature regarding laws that impact reproductive rights, access to healthcare, and health and safety issues for pregnant women in Louisiana. She regularly advises coalition and individual clients on legislative analysis and strategy.
Ellie’s work is often featured in the news, and she has been interviewed by many media outlets, including NBC Nightly News, ABC News, The Melissa Harris Perry Show, The Washington Post, The Nation, The Guardian, Rewire News, ProPublica, National Public Radio, The Times-Picayune and New Orleans Advocate, Verite News, and the Louisiana Illuminator, as well as other local television, radio, and print media throughout New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
Ellie began her practice in bankruptcy litigation at a large New York City law firm where she was involved in complex matters representing debtors, creditors’ committees, and fiduciaries, including several of the largest asbestos personal injury-related bankruptcies ever filed.
She is the co-founder of Lift Louisiana, a non-profit organization launched in 2016 with the mission of educating, advocating, and litigating for access to and the availability of reproductive health services. Ellie has taught courses as a Tulane Law School Adjunct Associate Professor, and she is often asked to present at CLEs and other speaking engagements addressing the legal, medical, and non-profit communities.
Honors and Recognitions
Ellie has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America for her work in commercial litigation from 2018 to the present, and she has been named to Louisiana Super Lawyer from 2019 to the present. Prior to that, she was a Louisiana Super Lawyers, “Rising Star,” from 2013 – 2016.
Ellie is a graduate of Tulane Law School, where she graduated summa cum laude and Order of the Coif, and was a member of the Tulane Law Review.
She is originally from Louisville, Kentucky. On the rare occasions when Ellie isn’t working to protect her clients’ rights, she enjoys cooking, traveling, and spending time with friends and family around New Orleans.
